Young Karatekas aim for glory at World University Karate Championship

Hundreds of young Karatekas from all over the world take the stage this week in 2016 World University Karate Championship. The quest to become the new Karate kings and queens at university level is being held in Braga (Portugal) in an event to showcase the future stars of the sport.

Hundreds of young Karatekas from all over the world take the stage this week in the 2016 World University Karate Championship. The quest to become the new kings and queens of Karate at university level is being held in Braga (Portugal) in an event to showcase the future stars of the sport.

The 10th edition of the FISU World University Karate Championship starts on Wednesday August 10th in UMinho Sports Hall in Gualtar (Portugal). Hopeful Karatekas from 40 countries are taking over the northern Portuguese city to demonstrate their abilities and to fight for gold in the anticipated event.

Karate fans can look forward to witnessing the actions of many rising stars of the sport, as many delegations are competing with some of the most notable young athletes in the world. The event was officially inaugurated in the opening ceremony being held on Tuesday in the Portuguese city. Authorities headlined WKF General Secretary Toshihisa Nagura wished the best of luck to the hundreds of participants gathering in Praça da República in downtown Braga, and hoped to experience memorable moments in the coming days.

The 2014 edition of the FISU World University Karate Championship was held in Bar (Montenegro). Japanese Karatekas topped the final standings of the competition with eight medals. Representatives from Iran, Egypt and Slovakia also registered successful performances.

The event held in Montenegro two years ago crowned young Karatekas who are now leading names of the sport. Karate Star Kiyou Shimizu claimed gold in Kata competition, while fellow Japanese top Karateka Uekusa Ayumi won in Female Kumite -68kg. Slovakia’s Ingrida Suchankova in Female Kumite -61 and Egypt’s Yassmin Attia in Female Kumite -55kg also excelled in the tournament.

The 2016 European Bronze medallists Logan Da Costa from France and Yves Martial Tadissi from Hungary reached the top of the podium in the 2014 FISU World University Karate Championship, while Egypt’s Ahmed Shawky in Kata and Montenegro's Danilo Lucic in Male Kumite +94kg were other of the big names of the event.
