The 2018 Friendships Games will be held in Bujumbura (Burundi) from August 17 to 19. Karate is one of the sports included in the programme of the Friendships Games and the World Karate Federation is partnering with Peace and Sport to contribute to the success of the event.

As part of Peace and Sport’s ongoing efforts to use sport as a tool for dialogue around the world, the organization will hold the 2018 Friendship Games in Bujumbura, Burundi from 17 to 19 August in cooperation with the National Olympic Committee of Burundi, and eight international sports federations.

This event brings together 200 young athletes from Burundi, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). For the ninth edition, Karate will play an even more active role at the event. The WKF is contributing through equipment and technical assistance, and the event will have the contribution of the Burundi Karate Federation. The Karate representation will be headed by first-class coach, African champion and World Championships runner-up Fodé Ndao, who will lead training sessions and different activities there and will oversee the Karate competition of the anticipated event.

Since 2009, Peace and Sport with the involvement of National Olympic Committees, international and national sporting federations, local authorities and Champions for Peace, supports six training centers in the Great Lakes region in Africa. Youngsters from these centres gather for a three-day event -the Friendship Games- marked by a sports tournament, cultural exchanges and peacebuilding activities. So far more than 1500 youngsters have had the opportunity to participate, compete, forge intercultural dialogue and experience the power of sport for peace.
