Dubai to host thrilling Karate 1-Premier League event

The Al Ahli Club in Dubai will host this weekend the fourth event of the season of the 2016 Karate 1-Premier League. The first class international Karate tournament comes to the Emirate city for a two-days competition that will gather the best Karate athletes in the world.

More than 600 Karatekas from 59 countries are registered to go for gold in the first edition of the Karate 1-Premier League in Dubai. The season of the most important league competitions in the world of Karate started in January in Paris (France), and it has also toured the venues of Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt) and Rotterdam (Netherlands) - together with Lasko (Slovenia) for the World Cup - to reach Dubai as the fourth destination of the ten-events championship. The Emirate city organises for the first time a tournament of the Karate 1-Premier League.

Some of the best Karate Stars in the world are expected to shine in Dubai this weekend. World champion Enes Erkan from Turkey will try to sign his eleventh consecutive medal in major international competitions, thus stating his command of Male Kumite +84kg category. Meanwhile, Spanish favourite Damian Quintero aims at extending the gold medal achieved in Rotterdam three weeks ago in the Male Kata competition so to increase his tally of four golds in Karate 1-Premier League tournaments.

Azerbaijan’s superstar Rafael Aghayev will receive much of the attention of Karate fans in Dubai as the current European champion in Male Kumite -75kg will debut this season in the venue of the Al Ahli Club. Also among favourites, Italy's Luigi Busa will try to showcase his abilities in the same category, thus presenting one of the most anticipated clashes of the event. World runners-up Malaysia’s Syakilla Salnijefry Krishnan in Female Kumite -61kg and Germany’s Ilja Smorguner in Male Kata are among the names to follow in Dubai.

The host nation presents the largest delegation competing in the Al Ahli Club with 55 athletes, followed by Italy with 51 competitors and India with 40 Karatekas. Representatives from France and Japan topped the podium of the starting event of the Karate 1-Premier League in Paris, while Egypt and Morocco crowned the standings in Sharm El-Sheikh. French and Turkish Karatekas claimed the top spots of the final classification in the Karate 1-Premier League in Rotterdam.

The action will start on Saturday morning with the Individual Male and Female Kata competitions and the event will finish on Sunday with the Finals, which are scheduled to begin at 10:30 GMT.
