Karate has been added to the sports programme of the 2019 ANOC World Beach Games. The ancient discipline will be one of the modalities in the 2019 edition of the multi-sport event to be held in San Diego (USA) from October 9 to 15.

No less than 15 sports and 17 disciplines are included in the inaugural edition of the ANOC World Beach Games. The sports programme comprises modalities that stand out by its dynamism and sporting spirit. In addition to Karate, the list of sports of the 2019 World Beach Games is completed with Aquathlon (triathlon), 3x3 basketball, BMX (cycling), Bouldering (sports climbing), Beach Handball, Kitefoil Racing (sailing), Park (skateboarding), Beach Soccer, Shortboard & Longboard (surfing), Kiteboarding, Open Water 5km (swimming), Beach Tennis, 4x4 Beach Volleyball, Waterski Jump & Wakeboard and Beach Wrestling.

Karate will be represented by the modality of individual Kata. The best Kata karatekas in the world will showcase the magnificence of the sport performing the spectacular choreographed movements on the sand.

“After the inclusion of Karate in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and in the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 - among other landmark moments of our sport – our discipline is now being added to another major multi-sport event. We will have the opportunity to show the world the greatness of Karate and the strength of our many principles, such as tradition, respect and courage,” said WKF President Antonio Espinós.

“I am convinced that we will give an added value to the Beach Games. Sports fans from all over the world will have the chance to enjoy watching Karate in such unique scenery,” added the head of Karate’s international governing body.

The Karate competition is scheduled for October 10th and 11th.  A total of 64 karatekas will participate in the event. The inaugural edition of the ANOC World Beach Games will take place on Mission Beach in the city of San Diego, California with 1360 athletes participating at the event.
