Karatekas continue Olympic quest in Karate 1-Series A Montreal

The third stop of the season of the 2019 Karate 1-Series A is taking place this weekend in Montreal (Canada) as karatekas from all over the world continue fighting for the points to qualify for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. 

Nearly 800 athletes from 79 countries are gathering this week in Montreal (Canada) in another showcase of the universality of the sport. After the successful events in Salzburg (Austria) and Istanbul (Turkey), the third tournament of the season of Karate 1-Series A is expected to continue capitalising on the surprises taking over the competition. Karatekas who are struggling to advance in the WKF World ranking succeeded in the two previous tournaments. 

Marina Rakovic of Montenegro who is placed 16th in WKF World ranking prevailed in Female Kumite -68kg in Istanbul while Japan’s Kakeru Nishiyama upset favourites in Male Kata and jumped from the position 18 in the ranking to the title in Istanbul. Dionysios Xenos of Greece is in the 16th position in the ranking in Male Kumite -67kg and reached the top of the podium in Istanbul, just as Mahdi Mahani Ghararizadeh of Iran in Male Kumite -84kg. Stefan Pokorny of Austria (placed 12th in the ranking) and Asiman Gurbanli of Azerbaijan (placed 13th) produced major upsets in Salzburg. 

The tournament in Montreal will also be animated by the five World champions on site. Jovana Prekovic of Serbia in Female Kumite -61kg, Eleni Chatzilidou of Greece in Female Kumite +68kg, Angelo Crescenzo of Italy in Male Kumite -60kg, Iran’s Bahman Asgari Ghoncheh in Male Kumite -75kg and Jonathan Horne of Germany in Male Kumite +84kg will catch the attention of fans this weekend.    

The tournament in Montreal is scheduled to start on Friday, June 21, at 8.30 (local time). The finals are scheduled for Sunday, June 23 from 15.00 to 18.00 (local time).
