Nauru celebrate first Karate championships

2019-05-23

The first Nauru Karate Championships were held this past week in a celebration of the global magnitude of the sport. As Karate continues its expansion around the world, one of the newest members of the WKF hosted the first edition of their Karate national championships.

The event was attended by WKF Technical Commission Chairman Con Kassis in representation of Karate’s international governing body. The competition had the presence of the President of Nauru His Excellency Hon. Baron Divavesi Waqa who showcased the support that the sport is receiving from the government of the Pacific island country.

First established in 1999, the Nauru Karate Federation became one of the latest countries to finalise its affiliation to the WKF after being ratified as a full member at the WKF Congress in Madrid (Spain) in November 2018. Under the leadership of national federation president Daniel Eoe, the Nauru Karate Federation has taken the sport to become one of the fastest growing disciplines in the country. After the first edition of the national championships, the representatives of the small island country in Micronesia hope to continue expanding their presence at Oceania Karate Federation and World Karate Federation events.
