The Youth Olympic Games is the world’s largest multi-sport event for high-performance young athletes aiming at inspiring athletes to embrace the Olympic values of RESPECT, FRIENDSHIP, AND EXCELLENCE.
The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) were created in 2007 by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a new elite sporting competition for young people with both, summer and winter editions. It is held every four years; it has two editions, winter and summer, which are organised every two years alternately. The first summer edition was held in Singapore in 2010 and the second summer YOG was held in Nanjing 2014. Summer editions count so far with an average participation of 3500 athletes and over 200 countries.
The third summer edition of the Youth Olympic Games will be held in 2018 in Buenos Aires (Argentina), where the sport of Karate will be represented for the first time. The Kumite competition comprising 6 Olympic Weight Categories (3 Male and 3 Female) will take place at the Europa Pavilion, located in the Youth Olympic Park at the Southern District of the City of Buenos Aires, in front of the Olympic Village (place of residence for athletes and trainers).
Each park will combine official sport competitions, sport events and cultural and educational activities for athletes, trainers, young people, families and the local and international community. The two designated Athlete Role Models (ARMs) for Karate, Nassim Varasteh (CAN) and Iván Leal (ESP) will engage directly with young athletes through the Focus Day activities. Our champions will also participate during the Sport Initiation activities organized in collaboration with the National Federation of Argentina. These activities will allow kids to understand and try out the sport of Karate for the first time.
