Qualification to Buenos Aires 2018 and Tokyo 2020 high on agenda at WKF Olympic Planning Commission meetings

The process to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 and the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 was on top of the agenda at the meetings of the WKF Olympic Planning Commission which took place this past weekend in Tenerife (Spain).

Chaired by WKF President Antonio Espinós, the meetings were held in the Spanish city as Tenerife hosted the 2017 World Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships. Issues regarding the allocation of athletes for Karate’s Olympic debut were reviewed at the gatherings.

As the Qualification system for Tokyo 2020 will be officially approved early next year, the Commission analysed the key dates in the qualification process. Specifically, the beginning of the period to allot points in the quest to Tokyo 2020 was reviewed. General matters on the Qualification tournament to be held in 2020 in Paris (France) were also discussed, and the Olympic standings were pinpointed following the recent publication of WKF World Ranking Rules.

In terms of the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018, updates were presented on the qualification tournament to be held next year in Umag (Croatia). Also, deadlines and important key dates were reviewed as the anticipated debut of Karate in the Youth Olympic Games nears the 300 days to go count. Implementations of the ranking regulations were revised to streamline the process of distribution of points. The Commission also resolved to send upcoming communications to major stakeholders to further define questions and clarify the next steps in the qualification process.
