WKF takes step towards historic 2021 World Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships in South Africa

Representatives of the World Karate Federation met with a delegation of the organising committee of the 2021 World Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships to be held in Cape Town (South Africa). The meeting aimed at initiating preparations for the second-ever World underage championships in Africa.

The city on South Africa’s Southwest coast was awarded the organisation of the XII edition of the biggest underage event of the sport putting Africa at the forefront of major Karate competitions and showcasing the global reach of the discipline. Cape Town will go down in Karate’s history as the second city in Africa to host World underage championships after the tournament organised in Rabat (Morocco) in 2009.

The meeting took place in Santiago (Chile) on the score of the 2019 World Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships. The WKF delegation was headed by WKF President Antonio Espinós. National federation president Sonny Pillay led the South African representatives in Chile.

Initial ideas to deliver the anticipated event were discussed while plans to ensure the long-lasting legacy in the city and in the country were also analysed.

“The aim of the WKF is to present the best version of our sport in all of our major events. Our World Championships have grown exponentially in terms of influence, media coverage and sponsors interest, therefore it is necessary to implement effective plans to maximise our opportunities in these events. After the visit today, all of us are encouraged to move forward and to continue our work,” said WKF President Antonio Espinós.
